Sun Java Real-Time System Enables Superior Integration and Portability

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), founder and lead advocate for Java technology, today released the Sun Java Real-Time System (Java RTS) software, providing developers of real-time software for embedded systems with a scalable and secure way to help ensure system responses during high-priority tasks.

Demonstrated at the 10th annual JavaOne Developer Conference, Java RTS software extends the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) by providing additional capabilities to aid developers in creating high-value, real-time software solutions that interact with the real world. This product, created from the successful Project Mackinac prototype developed in Sun Labs, retains full compatibility with existing Java SE software applications, while enabling new real-time components to be added to these applications for superior integration and portability in the growing real-time space. Java RTS software is based on the first Java Community Process [JCP] specification, JSR-01, which brings real-time capabilities to the Java platform.

Java RTS software broadens the reach of the Java SE platform by creating a robust and conformant implementation of the specification. To date, the Java SE platform has been downloaded more than 50 million times, into embedded systems across the spectrum of consumer electronics, military, aerospace, telecommunications, automotive manufacture and industrial automation – a software market estimated to be worth $2.7 billion by 2007, up from $1.5 billion today, according to analyst firm Venture Development Corp.

For mission-critical environments, Java RTS software brings extremely predictable, fast, and reliable program response capabilities to real-world situations, regardless of the number of other applications running. Java RTS software ensures that the most important tasks are always able to run and completely avoids priority inversion problems common to real-time systems.

For a promotional price of $29.95(USD) per month for a three-year subscription, Sun delivers a Sun Ultra 20 Workstation powered with the AMD Opteron processor equipped with the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), Sun Java Studio Enterprise 7 software and Sun Java Studio Creator 2004Q2 developer tools on one platform, including full access to world-class support and service.

The Sun Ultra 20 Workstation, equipped with the AMD Opteron processor 100 Series, has achieved a new world-record benchmark with SciMark, a Java technology-based benchmark for scientific and numerical computing(2).

Subscription or traditional pricing

Sun is offering a new Sun Services Subscription program, a promotional $29.95(USD) monthly subscription that requires a minimum commitment of three years and which can be renewed. The subscription model makes gaining access to Sun’s leading workstations easy to afford, and easy to own with complete service and support.

The Sun Ultra Workstations are also available with traditional pricing models, with the Ultra 20 priced at $895(USD) without support services. The entry-level configuration includes one AMD Opteron Processor Model 144, 512MB of DDR-400 memory, one 80GB Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive, ATI Entry 2D Graphics, one DVD-ROM optical drive, and is pre-loaded with thousands of dollars worth of award-winning developer tools on one platform. Sun is scheduled to announce the availability of Sun Ultra 20 Workstations with Dual-core AMD Opteron processors later this year. Entry-level pricing for the Sun Ultra 3 Mobile Workstation begins at $3,400 (USD). It is pre-loaded with the Solaris 10 OS, includes 550MHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB disk drive, entry 2D graphics, and wireless 802.11b, and will be generally available in July 2005.

Sun announced several other innovative programs to drive customer adoption quickly with the Ultra 20 ‘Try and Buy’ program that enables customers to try the Sun Ultra 20 Workstation for 90 days at no charge, with an option to purchase the system at the end of the program. The ‘Try and Buy’ program is available now until August 31, 2005.

The Sun Ultra 3 Mobile Workstation extends Sun’s SPARC processor-based systems portfolio into mobile computing, enabling software developers, government agencies and system administrators to run the same applications across enterprise servers, midrange servers, workstations, thin clients, and now mobile workstations.

IBM and Sun Microsystems Extend Java Technology Agreement

Ink Deal to Expand Support for IBM Software on Solaris 10

Renewing its commitment to collaboration on the Java platform, IBM and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), founder and lead advocate for Java technology, today announced a 10-year extension to their Java technology agreement, designed to provide long-term stability to the almost 4.5 million developers in the worldwide Java community. The two companies also announced plans to deliver IBM middleware support for the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) on SPARC(R), x86 and x64 systems.

Under the Java agreement, which extends to 2016, IBM will continue to license and use Java technologies from Sun, including Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) and Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) and Java Card throughout its software products, including its middleware and web services portfolios. With this extension, IBM and Sun continue to promote and re-affirm the value and necessity of Java compatibility across platforms and demonstrate that both companies are committed to Java innovation. Sun and IBM will also continue to advance and enhance the development of Java technology through the collaborative Java Community Process (JCP) . In addition, IBM will also expand its role to become a channel partner in delivering Java compatible products for the embedded market to Sun’s Java technology licensees.

Based on that interest, we have decided to port our key middleware products to Solaris 10 on Intel/AMD systems.”

IBM Agrees to Port Middleware to Solaris 10

Additionally, in response to customer demand, IBM will broaden support of its DB2, Rational, Tivoli and WebSphere software to include the Solaris 10 OS on x64 AMD Opteron -based platforms. The companies each plan to make dedicated investments in engineering and testing focused on product interoperability, performance optimization and timely delivery. As a result, customers will be able to take advantage of key features of Solaris 10, including Dynamic Tracing, Solaris Containers and Predictive Self Healing on any architecture, while protecting their investment in IBM software. Today’s news also demonstrates IBM and Sun’s ongoing commitment to help customers gain control of data center complexity to improve utilization and help ensure availability of business-critical data, while leveraging the compelling benefits of the Solaris 10 OS on SPARC �, x86 and x64 platforms.

Customers Laud Porting Agreement

Customers from multiple industries have voiced support for IBM applications running on the Solaris 10 OS.

(NASDAQ: SUNW), founder and lead advocate for Java technology, today announced the availability of new features in the next edition of its popular Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), Java EE 5. With these additions, Java EE 5 will bring ease of development and increased productivity for the Java community.

“With more than three million downloads and 26 Java compatible application server vendors, Java EE is the cornerstone of enterprise and web-based computing,” said Joe Keller, vice president of marketing, Applications and Developer Platforms, Sun Microsystems. “By listening to developers and building on Sun’s history of innovation in the Java platform, today we’re delivering the features that will facilitate the development of portable, robust, scalable enterprise applications.”

Key features in Java EE 5 will include:

MiTAC Technology Chooses the Fujitsu WiMAX SoC to Design and Manufacture Cost-Efficient WiMAX Customer Premise Equipment

Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), a leading provider of robust wireline and wireless solutions that enhance the performance of next-generation communications networks in North America, and MiTAC Technology Corporation (MTC), a leader in the electronics original design manufacturing industry, today announced that MiTAC will use the Fujitsu WiMAX System-on-Chip (SoC) to develop and manufacture MiTAC’s WiMAX Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). Fujitsu has shipped its WiMAX SoCs, the MB87M3400, to MiTAC to incorporate them into MiTAC’s CPEs.

The Fujitsu MB87M3400 uses an OFDM 256 (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) PHY that supports all the available channel bandwidths from 1.75MHz to 20MHz, and can operate in TDD or FDD mode. A programmable frequency selection function generates the sample clock for any desirable bandwidth. When implementing the 64QAM modulation in a 20MHz channel and using all 192 sub-carriers, the SoC’s data rate can potentially go up to 75Mbps. Uplink sub-channelization is also supported.

The Fujitsu WiMAX SoC incorporates sophisticated processing power, including a powerful main RISC engine that implements the 802.16 upper-layer MAC functions, scheduler, drivers, protocol stacks, and user application software. A secondary RISC/DSP functions as a co-processor, which executes the lower-layer MAC functions, offloading processing from the upper-layer MAC and enhancing the total SoC performance. A multi-channel DMA controller handles high-speed transactions among agents on a high-performance bus. (See related Press Releases dated April 21, 2005.)

Sun Highlights New Features of Carrier-Grade Solaris 10, Demonstrates Continued Leadership in Telecom Market

As an established leader in the telecommunications industry, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) continues to set the standard for carrier-grade operating systems with Solaris 10. Sun has certified its Netra server line of telecom hardware for the Solaris 10 OS. Additionally, more than 50 telecom software and hardware partners have announced support for Solaris 10 allowing them to deliver faster, more scalable and more secure solutions to a broad range of telecom customers. Customers such as Lucent Technologies and Verizon Communications Inc. highlight the widespread adoption of Sun’s latest carrier-grade, open source operating system.

“Used by the ten largest telecom equipment providers worldwide, Solaris is the most widely deployed and most secure carrier-grade operating system on the planet,” said John Loiacono, executive vice president, Software Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc. “With in-kernel support for the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and unique features such as Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), Solaris Containers and Predictive Self-Healing, for SPARC(R), x86 and x64 systems, Solaris 10 is the ideal platform for next-generation telecom services, such as 3G network infrastructure and converged IP-based network services.”

Sun recently made the source code to Solaris available at opensolaris.org under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL). This OSI approved open source license allows network equipment providers (NEP’s) to safely develop innovative new solutions for distribution under their own terms. Solaris 10 is indemnified by Sun, providing its customers and partners with patent, copyright and trademark infringement protection.

Rapid Adoption by Telecom Software and Hardware Providers

More than 50 hardware and software partners in the telecom industry have announced support for Solaris 10. A license agreement has been signed between Gaisler Research and Saab Ericsson Space AB for the use of the Gaisler Research Floating Point Unit

A license agreement has been signed for the use of the Gaisler Research Floating Point Unit (GRFPU) in the COLE ASIC developed by Saab Ericsson Space AB.  The COLE ASIC will merge the Leon2-FT SPARC processor with all bus interface support needed to implement spacecraft processing and control and to control mass memories or payloads. The GRFPU will be used to increase the calculating performance in the COLE ASIC.

The license agrement represents yet another example where the GRFPU is used in complex System On a Chip designs. The combination of the LEON processor and the powerful GRFPU gives the performance required by high end spacecraft applications, says Jiri Gaisler the CTO of Gaisler Research AB.

The GRFPU is fully IEEE-754 compliant and implements both single and double precision floating point operations. The GRFPU is available in a commercial version and in a fault tolerant version for space, military and critical applications.

Sun and Independent Software Vendor Partners Provide Integrated Solution to Meet Customers’ Electronic Document, Records Management and Retention Needs

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced the general availability of the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System. The system, a combination of the Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS Appliance and Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving Software offers an affordable and price competitive alternative for customers’ requirements for growing and complex records retention. Integrated with Sun’s industry leading(1) Identity Management solutions, to administer and report on access controls, and major ISV applications; the Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System provides a fully integrated solution to help facilitate compliance with the myriad of both government and business roles regulations — including HIPAA for healthcare, SEC Rule 17a-4 and Basel 2 for financial services, 21 CFR 11 for life sciences, as well the Sarbanes Oxley Act and its global equivalents.

The Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System enforces electronic record-retention policies at the storage level. Write-once read-many (WORM) files are non-rewritable and non-erasable. Robust security features–such as audit logs, user authentication, secure clock and access controls–combine to help safeguard the integrity of vital digital information. The system is fully redundant and, can be configured with clustering to ensure no single point of failure. It supports snapshot copies, remote data mirroring and a choice of either Fibre Channel or SATA disk that scales to 179TB. Bruce Overoye, director of IT, Santa Clara County Tax Collector’s Office, said: “We process over 850,000 payments, of property taxes annually, totaling $3 billion. All these transactions are imaged and each one has retention requirements of five, seven, 12 and 30 years, depending on the type of property tax. It is becoming increasingly critical that we drive security and data protection down to the data storage layer. Leading Australian Utility Provider Saves Time and Money by Replacing HP Tru64 Infrastructure With Sun Microsystems Platform

ActewAGL Powers Datacenter With Sun Fire v440 Servers and Solaris OS; Achieves Performance Gains of Up to 70 Percent

SANTA CLARA, Calif.,

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), today announced that Canberra, Australia-based utility provider ActewAGL has selected it as its IT infrastructure platform of choice for its core applications. The deal is another significant win for Sun’s HP-Away Migration Program, launched in 2003 and designed to help companies port their applications from HP’s AlphaServer/Tru64 platform to to Sun’s Solaris platform, running on UltraSPARC-based Sun Fire servers.

The migration to Sun has resulted in significant benefits for ActewAGL, including an average 50 percent improvement in performance, lower maintenance costs and ease of infrastructure management. The company also estimates it will save an additional $20,000 in annual maintenance costs by moving to Sun.

“We no longer had any faith in HP’s Tru64 technology and required alternative systems to provide 64-bit computing capability,” said Carsten Larsen, Chief Information Officer for ActewAGL. “Upon looking at what the market had to offer, we chose Sun Fire systems and the Solaris OS because it provided a simple yet robust, cost-effective solution.”

“We had reached the end of the line with our HP AlphaServer platform,” added Debesh Halder, Manager, Unix Systems, ActewAGL. “The technology was four years old and struggling to cope with increased demand. However, we were not keen to move to the HP-Intel developed Itanium architecture, which is a relatively new technology. We were looking for a stable, proven platform and Sun was it.”

Established in October 2000, ActewAGL is Australia’s first multi-utility. It provides electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services to more than 300,000 residential, business and government customers in the Australian Capital Territory. ActewAGL began offering telephony, high-speed data and video services from a number of providers in February 2004 after reaching an agreement with TransACT Capital Communications.

ActewAGL has installed six Sun Fire V440 servers, two Sun(TM) Rack 900 hardware cabinets and two K Virtual Machines (KVM) switches and migrated its core applications to the Sun Solaris Operating System. The project took about 12 months to complete, which included research, selection, procurement, custom development, testing and implementation. It was finished on time and within budget with help from Sun Microsystems.

Since going live with the Sun platform, ActewAGL has seen system performance improve by up to 70 percent. “A report that used to take 10 minutes to generate can now be completed in five minutes,” said Halder. “Staff can also login to financial applications via the Web, which is faster and more convenient for them. Productivity has improved and they are also much happier.”

Maintenance costs have been reduced. “The infrastructure is reliable, easy to support and the competitive Sun licensing structure has resulted in significant savings for ActewAGL,” said Halder. Security has also been bolstered with Sun’s enhanced safety features and robust architecture.

“We continually hear from customers that they’re reluctant to migrate their critical applications to the pricier, untested Itanium architecture,” said Larry Singer, senior vice president and strategic insights officer, Sun Microsystems. “Sun provides an excellent alternative. Our solutions are proven, include a broad base of ISV applications and importantly, protect customers’ investments in a new software infrastructure. We expect our data center migration programs to see continued momentum in coming quarters.”
