Sunnyvale, CA
May 4, 2005

Fujitsu Software Corporation today announced the availability of Interstage Contentbiz v7, the newest version of Fujitsu’s scalable application platform for enterprise content integration. Interstage Contentbiz v7 extends support for Web services and Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), offers a new extensible audit trail and enhances integration capabilities. Together, these features allow companies to more effectively access, modify and search structured and unstructured enterprise content resident in disparate, networked systems, independent of format or location. By providing more effective management of corporate intellectual capital assets, Interstage Contentbiz v7 enables businesses to optimize employee productivity, improve customer service and partner relations, comply with government mandates and maximize enterprise value. Key features and enhancements include:

  • Bidirectional WebDAV Agent enables integration with any enterprise content management (ECM) system that complies with the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) standard.
  • New Extensible Audit Trail ensures that proper audit trail information is maintained for all compliance documentation.
  • Enhanced Web Services Interface enables enterprises to leverage a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to create Web services and integrate reusable content integration services with applications.
  • New Web Content Agent extends the reach of content integration solutions to intranet and Internet content.
  • New Content Portlets, which comply with JSR 168 (Java Specification Request for Portlet API), provide commonly used content navigation and search functionality that can be easily deployed on enterprise portals.

Interstage Contentbiz v7 builds on the application platform’s proven performance in enabling enterprises to leverage their entire knowledge asset base – pooling knowledge through content integration and delivering transparent access to information in real-time. It provides simple, extensible content integration services that adhere to open standards. With Interstage Contentbiz, companies can access structured and unstructured enterprise content from different systems and sources, facilitating unified content views, maintaining content integrity across the company and enabling better content repurposing and reuse.

“Faced by competitive pressures to better optimize customer and supply chain relationships, as well as growing demands for government compliance, companies need to turn their isolated silos of knowledge into unified views and processes,” said Robert Sepanloo, senior vice president of Interstage at Fujitsu Software Corporation. “With Interstage Contentbiz v7, we continue our commitment to helping companies achieve their strategic and financial objectives by providing best-in-class technology for harnessing corporate knowledge and intellectual capital – regardless of location or format.”

Interstage Contentbiz v7 Features and Enhancements

Interstage Contentbiz is a scalable, extensible platform for viewing, searching and modifying content from a range of sources, including data from enterprise resource planning (ERP) and other enterprise applications, relational databases and a variety of enterprise content management systems. It also repurposes content for many different audiences without the difficulty and cost of duplication. The Java-based, modular architecture leverages open standards, such as WebDAV and Web services, and includes a proven metadata repository, SDK and a set of services and content agents. With v7, Interstage Contentbiz offers significant new features and enhancements to facilitate enterprise content integration, including a WebDAV agent, extensible audit trail, Web services interface, Web content agent and new content portlets.

WebDAV Agent

Interstage Contentbiz v7 offers a new WebDAV integration agent to extend support for the WebDAV standard for editing files and folders remotely over the Internet. The WebDAV Agent makes it possible to search multiple WebDAV-compliant enterprise content management repositories simultaneously and modify content and metadata from each ECM system based on content access policies.. By providing a standards-based approach to integrating content from multiple repositories, the WebDAV agent eliminates the time to develop and maintain custom integrations.

Extensible Audit Trail

A comprehensive content audit trail is a key requirement for any compliance application. The new extensible Interstage Contentbiz audit trail contains a variety of content events, such as content creation, update and delete, and all content life cycle transitions, such as content approval, publishing and archiving with the timestamp information and the name of the user responsible for each state or transition. It also keeps track of system security-related events, such as when users were added or removed, the roles and access that users are assigned, and when each user logs into the system. All audit trail information can be viewed and queried in the Web-based content browser or any custom client application, based on time, audit events or content types.

Web Services Interface

The Interstage Contentbiz Web Services Interface enables enterprises to leverage a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to integrate reusable content integration services, such as full-text search, with applications that need access to both structured and unstructured content sources. The Web Services interface enables Web service client applications to access the Interstage Contentbiz virtual repository to retrieve a content item or a list of content items from multiple sources as if they were all stored in one repository and request for metadata information. With v7, the Web Services Interface adds a new, extensible Web Services Management component for creating and publishing Web services for any new Interstage Contentbiz service that customers may build for their content integration applications.

Web Content Agent

Many large enterprises have numerous dedicated intranet sites for its business units or departments with constantly growing content volumes, but no means to search across all of these independent sites. Interstage Contentbiz v7 introduces a new Web Content Agent, which goes beyond the dedicated search and query tools of other systems, to extend the reach of content integration to intranet and Internet information. The Web Content Agent enables organizations to register all required site URLs in the content integration solution. It then crawls the registered sites and their sub-structures on predefined intervals, making the site content fully searchable in Interstage Contentbiz full-text searches.

Content Portlets

Enterprise portals typically require portlets to handle each of the many content sources on which they rely, from databases and business applications to document repositories. Interstage Contentbiz provides a common content integration layer to help ease the cost and difficulty of integrating various content sources with portals. This allows portal users to navigate to all content sources via a unified navigation tree, which can be exposed as a single portlet. Interstage Contentbiz v7 now features a set of portlets that comply with the Java Specification Request (JSR) 168 Portlet API and provide commonly used content navigation and search functionality.

NewEnergy Powers Grid Infrastructure With Sun Systems

Sun Fire x64 Servers With the AMD Opteron Processor Increase Computational Simulations, Reduce Heat Generation by 30 Percent; Solaris 10 Operating System Selected Over Linux

ATLANTA and SANTA CLARA, Calif.
May 4, 2005

At the NewEnergy Forum 2005, the conference for energy industry leaders, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that NewEnergy Associates, a Siemens Company and provider of end-to-end energy IT and consulting solutions for decision support and energy operations, has selected Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z servers over all top-tier x64 server offerings, and the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) over standard Linux distributions as part of its high-performance grid infrastructure. The solution, powered by the AMD Opteron[TM] processor, is designed to accelerate applications by increasing computational power, maximize system efficiency and uptime, and provide 30 percent lower heat output than competing alternatives.

With the advent of grid computing and Monte Carlo analysis (data obtained by simulating a statistical model in which all parameters are numerical), NewEnergy’s datacenter has grown rapidly. Due to an increase in the computational power used for these simulations, NewEnergy’s datacenter experienced a dramatic increase in air-conditioning costs caused by the heat created by the large numbers of servers that were not from Sun. Sun’s x64 servers run 30 percent cooler than competing alternatives, making them an ideal choice.

In addition to being a Sun customer, NewEnergy Associates, a Siemens Company provides software, energy business solutions and industry expertise to more than 200 clients throughout the world. The company enables customers to meet the largest challenges in strategic and financial planning, energy market and transmission analysis, energy trading, risk management, as well as retail and wholesale energy market operations.

“After 29 years of business, for the first time NewEnergy is no longer vendor agnostic,” said Neal Tisdale, vice president of software development, NewEnergy Associates. “We owe it to our customers to recommend the virtually unmatched price-performance and reduced heat generation of Sun’s x64 server line powered by the AMD Opteron processor over all other tier-one vendors evaluated. The ability to upgrade to higher throughput dual-core CPU’s without increasing the heat output, and the flexibility to run Solaris OS, Windows or standard Linux distributions, provides a great investment and a dramatic decrease in operational costs.”

In addition, NewEnergy selected Solaris 10, over competing operating systems, for its unparalleled track record, its innovative and comprehensive Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) capability, expansive global support network, and the ability of Solaris 10 to be binary- compatible with other versions.

“As a leading global provider of energy IT solutions expertise, NewEnergy Associates represents a growing category of customers who are demanding more from their IT systems,” said Lisa Sieker, vice president of marketing, Network Systems Group at Sun Microsystems. “With extreme performance, reliability, serviceability and flexibility, Sun’s x64 systems provide NewEnergy with virtually unrivaled return on enterprise IT investment. These stellar benefits, coupled with the powerful and innovative features of Solaris 10, provide a winning combination for NewEnergy Associates, and its need for higher computational grid technology.”

NewEnergy’s investment in Sun technology includes Java technology, Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition, the Solaris 10 OS, and latest Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z servers. Sun’s technology offerings help NewEnergy establish a thorough grid computing infrastructure, run Oracle databases with large memory requirements, and conduct faster risk analysis, which previously required overnight computations. TOSHIBA INSTALLS ULTRA MRI SYSTEM AT BOYNTON BEACH OPEN IMAGING CENTER IN FLORIDA

Imaging Center Expands Clinical Capabilities and Delivers Faster, More Comfortable Exams

TUSTIN, Calif.,
May 3, 2005

Leading the open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) market with standard-setting gradient performance, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. (TAMS) today announced the installation of the Ultra open-MRI system at Boynton Beach Open Imaging Center in Florida.  With its cryogenless superconducting magnet design, unique gradient field technology, and the industry’s best slew rate, Ultra is one of the most powerful whole body open-MRI systems available today.  The system enables clinicians at Boynton Beach Open Imaging Center to perform faster, higher-resolution imaging and offer advanced imaging techniques using an open-MRI design.

“The Ultra MRI system represents the best of patient-comfort designs without sacrificing performance for advanced clinical studies,” said Anita Bowler, MR product manager, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc.  “With its powerful gradient technology and open design, the Ultra offers clinical capabilities comparable to a high-field MRI system to offer procedures such as True Steady-State Free Precession (SSFP) and Super Fast Advanced Spin Echo (FASE), while accommodating both large and claustrophobic patients.”

“We are impressed with the outstanding performance of the Ultra system.  The system’s gradient technology and slew rate are a quantum leap in open architecture design and image quality.  The greatest benefit of the Ultra is faster imaging time, which translates to improved image quality with less patient motion artifacts,” said Richard Sarner, M.D., medical director and chief medical officer, Florida Open Imaging Centers.  “We’ve also experienced stellar results when performing MRI studies such as post-operative imaging of cervical spinal fusion.  Our clinicians not only are able to visualize the inter-body fusion, but also clearly distinguish each individual screw.  We also are able to accommodate both orthopedic and internal medicine referrals because the Ultra is able to perform advanced applications, such as Steady State Free Precession (SSFP), as well as vascular and MR Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) abdominal imaging.  MRCP in particular was not possible with past open-MRI configurations, but the Ultra is capable of this application.”

“In addition to imaging patients more quickly, the four-post design of the Ultra is the most patient-friendly open-MRI design available with its large side-to-side and top-to-bottom openings.  This is particularly beneficial for large patients and professional athletes, who we scan on a regular basis at our facility,” added Dr. Sarner.

High-performance System Design
Ultra is the most advanced and powerful whole body open-MRI system available with its unique MRI gradient field technology featuring amplitude of 25 mT/m (milli-Tesla per meter) and the industry’s best slew rate of 100 T/m/s (Tesla per meter per second).  As a result, this slew rate allows the Ultra’s gradient speed to be nearly five times faster than current open systems and 250 percent greater than its high-field counterparts.

At this performance level, the Ultra offers clinical capabilities that are comparable to those of more costly high-field systems, and allows the application of high-field imaging techniques, such as Single-shot Echo-planar Imaging (EPI) Diffusion, True SSFP, SuperFASE and Black Blood MR Angiography.

In addition to a strong tradition of collaboration on specific projects, in September 2004, Sun opened its new iForce(SM) Solution Center for government. This facility provides the resources and support to build and test real-world environments that government and commercial customers can leverage more quickly, securely and reliably to help define and solve business problems and integration challenges. The “test before you invest” methodology helps to promote interoperability across multi-vendor solutions, as the center is designed to mitigate risk, reduce cost and assist in the development of solutions that address specific business processes.

Sun’s strong presence in the U.S. government market is matched by its goal to assist governments worldwide in providing the best technologies to their constituents. The Belgian Ministry of Finance has awarded Sun its Identity Access and Management project. Sun will help develop a role- and rule-based access control solution to manage the identities of 35,000 civil servants and contractors. Other projects around the world include implementing one of the world’s largest archiving projects at the D-sseldorf-based Rheinprovinz State Insurance Institution, where Sun masterminded the development of the entire systems landscape, from database and archive clusters, to disk and tape memories. As one of Germany’s leading statutory pension insurers, the State Insurance Institution has 4,300 employees and 6.6 million clients in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is estimated that the digital archiving of more than 1.3 million old files will save millions of Euro.

On the state and local level, the City of Oakland has recently expanded its relationship with Sun after cutting payroll processing time from four days on its former systems to seven hours on the Sun Fire(TM) 15K server. The City of Oakland then turned to Sun for an enterprise-scale server refresh and storage upgrade to automate more of its business processes. By increasing its computing capacity, the City of Oakland anticipates migrating applications from expensive legacy servers, providing the compute resources required for new applications, while continuing to experience high levels of performance and system availability as it processes payroll, manages its finances and carries out human resources activities.

“Sun’s unwavering dedication to global, national, state and local governments is evident in everything we do. From the Government iForce Center to our position in the Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium, which works to ensure that DoD and intelligence community information is easily interoperable, we believe our strengths in security and scalability are unmatched and respected, and we will continue to innovate for governments around the world so they can better serve their populations,” said Masters.

eBay Scales Global Business on Sun Infrastructure

New Technologies and Services Provide Smarter Options for Enterprise and Government Customers and Amplify Capabilities of the Solaris 10 Operating System and Sun Grid

WASHINGTON, D.C.
May 3, 2005

During its quarterly Network Computing ’05(NC05Q2) launch today, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW) announced Sun(SM) Connection, the first of many services to be delivered as part of the company’s Sun(TM) Grid model. Built on the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), the always-on Sun Connection program joins Sun’s compute ($1/cpu-hr) and storage ($1/GB-mo) offerings as services that extend Sun’s grid strategy.

“Today Sun is providing customers with smarter technology options, more control over their data centers and the ability to maximize economies of scale throughout their IT infrastructure,” said Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO of Sun. “CIOs no longer need to hand over the keys to their kingdom to services behemoths, because the power to run their business is back in their own hands. With the combined muscle of our new Sun Connection Services and the Solaris 10 OS, we’re offering to take responsibility for security updates and systems monitoring for our enterprise and public sector customers. Sun’s product and service offerings are solving problems for everyone, from the IT manager to the CIO, by allowing them to move from a customized data center model, to a standardized model, and eventually to a true utility model in the data center.”

Currently, Sun has eight major Sun Grid proof-of-concepts underway and dozens of similar engagements across large enterprise customers in industries including: financial services, oil and gas, life sciences and entertainment. The technological advancements of Sun Grid and the Solaris 10 OS continue to redefine network computing as a service model, while addressing the core issues of complexity and cost in the data center.

Continuing to change the playing field with new business models, Sun also introduced Sun Java(TM) StorEdge(TM) Software, a new storage subscription offering that removes the complexity of licensing storage software and support services. This announcement follows the success of other revolutionary pricing and business models from Sun including a shift to make the Solaris 10 OS, which Sun has distributed more than 1.3 million registered licenses since Jan. 31, 2005, free of charge and the launch of the Sun Java Enterprise System, which serves nearly 500,000 users today. Sun also outlined its ‘4X4’ approach for helping customers develop the strategies they need to maximize their existing and next-generation information technology (IT) infrastructures and drive economies of scales faster.

“For the past eight years, eBay has consistently turned to Sun for technology leadership,” said Tom Keeven, vice president of operations and infrastructure, eBay. “eBay requires an IT infrastructure that can quickly scale with its expanding needs and meet all critical requirements for business availability and high throughput, at the lowest total cost of ownership. Sun’s systems and the Solaris OS have helped our data centers maintain record availability. In the first quarter of this year, eBay has 147 million registered users worldwide, trading more than $1,344 worth of goods on the site every second. Accordingly, eBay’s customers depend on our infrastructure robustness.”

Washington D.C. provided the backdrop for Sun’s NC05Q2 product launch event and helped to highlight its ongoing commitment to global governments and longer-range strategic design work in the U.S. According to forecasts issued by IDC in April 2005, the U.S. government’s technology spending will continue to grow steadily, increasing from approximately $43 billion in 2004 to nearly $52 billion by 2007. Demonstrating Sun’s strong industry ties, companies such as: AC Technology, General Dynamics, GTSI, Tadpole Computer and World Wide Technology participated at the Sun event as part of the Technology Pavilion.

New Products and Services Attack Data Center Pain Points

According to an industry report commissioned by Sun Microsystems, Inc. and conducted by an independent research firm, Momentum Research Group in January 2005, nearly 80 percent of respondents expect their IT spending to increase this year in order to address some of their top concerns in the data center, including: IT security, efficiency, consolidation and utilization. In fact, 20 percent of the government data center managers polled said they were uncomfortable with current levels of security and more than 75 percent of all respondents said that they plan to begin, or have already begun, consolidation projects. As part of its NC05Q2 launch event, Sun is delivering new products and solutions to help smart enterprise and government customers attack the data center’s most complex issues.

Sun Connection – Sun redefines the services relationship with customers through its revolutionary new Sun Connection, an integrated, secure network services connection. The service allows for continuous benchmarking of IT health and performance and lets customers save time, money, and resources by providing them with real-time access to sophisticated remote servicing and predictive diagnostic services, availability status, software updates, and other features. The first new Sun Connection service is Sun Update Connection, which delivers all the latest fixes and features for Sun software through a utility model, radically simplifying and reducing the cost of keeping Sun systems and software up to date by offloading the task of managing updates to Sun. Sun Connection portal will aggregate the following connected services: intelligent software updating, availability monitoring and reporting, remote servicing and collaboration, automated risk assessment and remediation, asset tracking and reporting, configuration management, community access, self-support tools and online training.

Java StorEdge System and Managed Storage Services – The Sun Java StorEdge Software program is a unique way for customers to acquire and deploy Sun’s comprehensive suite of storage and data management software and services in-house. Through its simple, affordable and predictable licensing model, customers are able to purchase the right bundle of Sun storage software to manage their heterogeneous environments. For the complete Java StorEdge Software package, customers can pay either $350 per employee per year, or purchase storage capacity, starting at $400,000 for five terabytes (TB) per year. This licensing model offers customers a potential cost savings of at least 30 percent in comparison to typical, point-product offerings.

Sun Microsystems Redefines Services Relationship with Customers Through Revolutionary New Sun Connection

Delivers IT Operations Management as a Utility Servic

WASHINGTON, D.C.
May 3, 2005

During its Network Computing ’05 (NC05Q2) launch today, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) announced Sun(SM) Connection, an integrated, secure services connection that links customers, partners, developers and Sun in a dynamic and collaborative network-based community. With Sun Connection, the network is a key component of Sun’s service relationship with its customers and a way for Sun to deliver ongoing value.

Sun Connection continuously benchmarks information technology (IT) health and performance and lets customers save time, money and resources by providing them real-time access to sophisticated remote servicing and predictive diagnostic services, availability status, software updates and other features. Sun Connection is designed for customers who self-manage their IT environments. Sun also announced Sun Management Connection, management services that leverage the Sun Connection capabilities and allow customers to selectively outsource their IT management to Sun.

“The challenge isn’t making the system scale, it’s making the customer scale. It’s not about fast computers, it’s about a fast customer,” said Jonathan Schwartz, president and chief operating officer at Sun. “Sun Connection is about the connected customer — always on, always connected. Sun Connection brings rocket science to the datacenter. By generating services economies of scale through technology and not people, Sun Connection is creating a new breakthrough IT services economic model — delivering IT as a service.”

Sun Connection harnesses more than 20 years of Sun innovation, including Sun Preventive Services, along with Sun best practices and network computing firsts, to provide intelligent services over the network through a simple graphical user interface. A base level of these new advanced services will be delivered within existing service plans at no additional cost to Sun customers.

The first new Sun Connection service is Sun Update Connection, Sun’s software update utility. Sun Update Connection delivers all the latest fixes and features for Sun software through a utility model, radically simplifying and helping to reduce the cost of keeping Sun systems and software up to date by offloading the task of managing updates to Sun. Sun Update Connection leverages the network to provide customers with access to Sun’s knowledge and updates, increasing efficiency of system and software maintenance and reducing IT cycles, all while increasing overall stability and security. Sun Update Connection helps customers minimize change by tapping into an extensive knowledge base, which includes more than one million system configurations and a powerful business rules engine, to provide informed recommendations about relevant updates.

“Sun Connection leverages Sun Grid and other Sun technologies in ways that deliver specific business benefits and value,” said Michael Dortch, principal business analyst, Robert Frances Group (RFG). “The ability to make granular recommendations for risk mitigation and system updates based on specific business needs and architectural considerations should be compelling to companies currently or considering doing business with Sun. With Sun Connection, Sun can credibly position itself as an effective, innovative provider of trusted IT services with demonstrable business benefits that can extend from single systems to entire enterprises.”

“Sun Connection is a great testament to the Sun connected customer strategy. It allows us to continue to reduce costs while taking advantage of Sun’s preventive capabilities, sophisticated analytics and partner knowledge,” said Bill Kirkland, president, Logistic Computer Services (LCS). “Sun Connection is really a unifying backdrop for the idea of leveraging IT as a service. Sun is way ahead of the competition in that LCS now has a flexible solution that enhances our services relationship with Sun and enables us to better service our customers.”

The initial release of Sun Update Connection delivers individual system updates for the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) running on any platform — Sun, Dell, HP or IBM. Sun will later extend support for previous versions of the Solaris OS. In the future, Sun Update Connection will deliver updates for all Sun software and systems, including Java(TM) technology, firmware, middleware, the Sun Java Desktop System and even updates from Sun partners, including Veritas.

“Veritas and Sun have a long standing strategic alliance. Together we are always looking for ways to continually improve our customers’ support experience,” said Michael Wentz, senior vice president, Technical Services, Veritas Software. “We applaud Sun for offering their customers an innovative and efficient way to help keep their software secure and up-to-date.”

Through Sun Connection, users now have an entry point to Sun Grid, Sun’s new standardized global grid. With Sun Grid and Sun Connection, customers give up the expense and complexity of building out an entire computing infrastructure — and gain more flexibility to help run their businesses at significantly lower costs.

The Sun Connection portal will aggregate the following connected services:

  • Intelligent software updating (Sun Update Connection )
  • Configuration reporting and analysis
  • Remote event detection, notification and reporting
  • Availability reporting
  • Collaborative remote servicing
  • Access to a community of experts and best practices, self-support tools, and online training
