Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that Sun’s Enterprise class UltraSPARC(R) IV-based Sun Fire E20K system running Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) has set a new Manugistics Fulfillment v7.1 benchmark world record. Sun demonstrates industry-leading performance and price/performance on the 36-way Sun Fire E20K server (1) by beating IBM’s newest 32-way Power5 server, the IBM P5-590 by 23 percent, with a 45 percent price/performance advantage based on hardware category pricing.

Many of the world’s largest retailers use Manugistics solutions to reduce costs and improve customer service by replenishment planning at the store level. The Manugistics applications are built on open standards and architected to the Java2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). The Manugistics NetWORKS Fulfillment 7.1 benchmark measures throughput results for real world complex retail supply chain management systems and workloads. These results demonstrate Sun’s ability to run complex workloads efficiently and effectively, and also showcase Sun’s chip multithreading innovation with the 1.35 GHz UltraSPARC IV processors running 10 percent faster than IBM’s 1.65 GHz POWER5 processors.

In order to achieve this record, both database and application servers were on a single system, demonstrating the server consolidation capabilities of Sun Fire servers. In addition, the superior batch processing capability of the Sun Fire E20K server that balances I/O, memory, and CPU processing power, as well as its ability to scale near linearly as processor are added, played an instrumental role in delivering unbeatable performance on real world supply chain workloads. The performance of the 36-way Sun Fire E20K server was 3 times faster than the 12-way Sun Fire E4900 server on the same size workload (with a third of the processors).

Sun Provides Free Service Plan Updates to Customers Through SunSpectrum Program

New Services Add Value to Sun’s Top-Rated Support Offerings – Independent Study Cites ROI Savings Up to 67%; Reduces Cost of Support, Improves System Availability and Increases System Administrator Productivity

HOPKINTON, Mass. and SANTA CLARA, Calif.
June 23, 2005

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW) today announced that it has made new services available to tens of thousands of Sun customers with SunSpectrum Service Plan coverage. SunSpectrum Service Plans, Sun’s most popular product support offerings, provide integrated hardware and Solaris Operating System support for Sun servers and workstations. Many of the service enhancements utilize Sun Connection, an integrated, secure services connection that links customers, partners, developers and Sun in a dynamic and collaborative network-based community.

“We see a real opportunity within the market to provide unparalleled value to customers through a series of compelling enhancements to our customers’ coverage,” said Don Grantham, executive vice president of Services at Sun Microsystems. “The industry has forgotten what good customer support is all about. Too many vendors are pushing end-to-end outsourcing or undertaking cost-cutting measures that alienate their customers. Sun’s approach is different — we offer choice without hidden agendas and we strive to put our customers first. This guiding approach has served us well over the years and with the strength of our new product line, we will continue to raise the bar on customer support.”

New Services in SunSpectrum Service Plan

Sun’s new services, which are immediately available at no additional cost to customers with SunSpectrum Service Plan coverage, include:

  • SunSpectrum eLearning Library: An online library of technical training modules available at no additional cost. The initial set of modules focuses on the Solaris Operating System and includes new courseware for Solaris 10.
  • Sun Update Connection: The first service available through Sun Connection, Sun Update Connection helps customers keep their Sun systems up-to-date and secure with automatic notification of Solaris Operating System updates, advanced analysis capabilities and multi-system remote update management. A preview release of Sun Update Connection is scheduled to be available by the end of the quarter.
  • One-Stop Interoperability Assistance: Sun is formally expanding its interoperability support through a broader network of participating vendors and the inclusion of joint support centers that Sun now operates with Oracle, SAP and VERITAS.
  • System Health Check Subscription: Systems with SunSpectrum Platinum Service Plan coverage are now entitled to receive Sun’s on-demand configuration assessment service, Sun System Analysis. This service helps companies proactively manage mission-critical systems.

The new Sun Spectrum services are a result of customer requests to provide a holistic solution to bring value to their business. To quantify these offerings, Sun Services engaged leading third party research companies to better understand customer perception and potential value.

Quantifying the Value of Support

Sun enlisted Forrester Research’s TEI Consulting Team to investigate the Sun Spectrum Service Plan for customers. Forrester examined the total economic impact and return on investment of SunSpectrum services in a study published in April 2005.

The Forrester study, commissioned by Sun, yielded key findings, including: lower total cost of support, improved systems availability and improved system administrator productivity with SunSpectrum service as compared to a break/fix environment. Forrester interviewed current international and national SunSpectrum service customers in financial services, telecommunications and publishing industries and through a Total Economic Impact framework developed a composite organization. The estimate risk-adjusted ROI for this composite company was 67% with a break-even point (payback period) within 12 months.

Sun also commissioned TNS Prognostics in June 2004 to gauge customer value. TNS Prognostics asked companies to rate the product support offerings of top IT vendors. Sun’s Service Plans prevailed and were ranked number one in customer value, beating Dell and IBM.

Grantham concluded, “Our best just got better with the new SunSpectrum services. Sun is building on a position of strength with top-rated support offerings, strong ROI and validation from leading industry analysts. Moving forward, as we engage with new customers, we tell them to expect the best from Sun Services.”

Terabeam Wireless Announces Plans for WiMAX Systems Based on the Fujitsu System-on-Chip

TeraMax™ 3.0 Products To Include New “Logan” Operating System and Planned for General Availability in 4Q 2005

Falls Church, VA and Sunnyvale, CA
May 23 , 2005

Terabeam Wireless, the business name of YDI Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ:YDIW), a leading developer and supplier of broadband wireless solutions, and Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), a leading provider of robust and highly integrated wireline and wireless system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for next generation networks, today announced that Terabeam has selected the Fujitsu MB87M3400 WiMAX SoC as the standard silicon for integration into Terabeam’s TeraMax™ 3.0 product family. The TeraMax™ 3.0 products will be WiMAX-compliant, will incorporate Terabeam’s new wireless network management operating system, code-named “Logan,” and are planned for general availability in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Terabeam will offer turnkey point-to-multipoint and point-to-point systems complying with the IEEE 802.16-2004 WiMAX standard as an extension of its TeraMax™ product series. Current TeraMax™ products have been providing customers with much of the functionality of WiMAX since 2004, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), adaptive dynamic polling, packet aggregation, and enhanced security options. TeraMax™ base stations, customer premise equipment (CPE), and bridges are available today for operation at multiple frequency bands – including the 4.9GHz band dedicated to public safety in the United States – and are also available in compact (integrated-antenna) and ruggedized enclosures. With a powerful combination of performance, versatility, and value, TeraMax™ systems are ideal for a variety of applications and environments for service providers, enterprises, municipalities, and public safety organizations.

The Fujitsu MB87M3400 is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.16-2004 WiMAX standard and can be configured to be used in both base station and subscriber station applications. It is designed to support frequencies ranging from 2 to 11GHz in both licensed and license-exempt bands. An on-chip OFDM PHY supports channel bandwidths from 1.75MHz up to 20MHz, and can operate in TDD or FDD modes. When applying a 64QAM modulation in a 20MHz channel and using all 192 sub-carriers, the SoC’s data rate can go up to 75 Mbps. The SoC incorporates sophisticated processing power, including a powerful main RISC engine that implements the 802.16 upper-layer MAC, scheduler, drivers, protocol stacks, and user application software. Also on board is a secondary RISC/DSP that functions as a co-processor, which executes lower-layer MAC functions, offloading processing from the upper-layer MAC and enhancing the total SoC performance.

“Logan” has been under development for over three years and was a significant driver of Terabeam’s acquisition in 2004 of KarlNet, Inc. Logan is a processor-agnostic operating system that can support multiple wireless modes (including 802.11 and the proprietary TurboCell® currently, and 802.16 by 4Q 2005) and is significantly more adaptable for ongoing development. Logan’s agility and versatility allow for a major streamlining of Terabeam’s software portfolio, and it enables support for quality of service (QoS), voice-over-IP (VoIP), state-of-the-art security and IPv6. Logan’s user interface and configuration and management tools provide for an enhanced user experience. Logan will be integrated into select Terabeam products throughout the remainder of 2005.

“Terabeam’s extensive range of broadband wireless networking products has been deployed around the globe by service providers, enterprises and government entities. The addition of WiMAX-compliant systems to our portfolio will build on our heritage of excellence in wireless networking,” said Robert Fitzgerald, Terabeam Wireless’ CEO. “The Fujitsu WiMAX System-on-Chip delivers the performance we require at an excellent price point, and we are pleased to have aligned ourselves with a leader in this exciting technology. In addition, our introduction of the Logan operating system to uniformly support all of our standards-based and proprietary products will result in a quantum leap in performance, scalability and management control in broadband wireless networking.”

“Terabeam’s decision to work closely with Fujitsu on its WiMAX development is very exciting and gratifying to our broadband wireless team,” said Keith Horn, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “It also underscores our contention that 2005 is truly the year in which WiMAX technology will emerge in multiple markets worldwide as the leading companies in the industry, like Terabeam, move forward with significant product development, compliance testing, and initial field deployments.”

Terabeam Wireless will be participating in ISPCON from May 24 to 26 at the Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and will be showcasing its broadband wireless products in booth 318. Terabeam Wireless (booth 87019) and Fujitsu (booth 41015) will be participating in SUPERCOMM 2005 from June 7 to 9 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. Terabeam will host an executive briefing at 1:00 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, June 7 in Room #N427D (Level 4 in South Building, McCormick Place).

Sun Strikes Major Deal With KT (Korea Telecom) to Provide Operations Infrastructure and Services

Sun’s Leadership and Experience in OSS through Java Helps ISVs, Carriers Radically Reduce System Integration Costs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and NICE, France, TeleManagement World
May 18 , 2005

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), the creator and leading advocate of Java technology, today announced a major deal with KT (formerly Korea Telecom) to power the carrier’s next-generation operations infrastructure. In addition to engaging Sun’s Client Solutions organization to design an Operations Support Systems through Java solution running on Sun Fire servers powered with SPARC and AMD Opteron processors, KT’s selection helps fortify Java technology as the solution of choice to help carriers design cost-effective, modular and re-usable operations infrastructures.

Sun’s Client Solutions organization will work with KT Operations Labs to develop a Broadband Convergence Network (BcN) network management system. With Sun’s OSS through Java solutions and services, KT will be able to easily implement new operations solutions and integrate with multiple legacy systems, as well as support web-based, customer-centric service management for BcN services and networks. As part of the deal, KT also selected Sun Fire Enterprise 25K, Enterprise 4900, Enterprise 6900 and Sun Fire V40z servers, the Java Enterprise System and the Solaris Operating System.

“KT offers a wide variety of market-leading telecommunications products and services to one of the most demanding marketplaces in the world,” said Seonghak Seok, Director of OSS Labs, KT. “We have been looking forward to an open standards-based solution to manage our BcN networks and services that we can implement quickly and cost effectively. I believe OSS/J is an ideal operations infrastructure to satisfy these needs, and Sun’s extensive telecommunications experience further makes them the right partner to develop an operations infrastructure for any network and application.”

By providing an open standards-based infrastructure for business integration, OSS through Java architecture enables carriers to more quickly, easily and cost effectively integrate new enterprise-grade applications and legacy systems. Sun’s ongoing leadership and collaboration with over 50 vendors and ISVs in the OSS/J Initiative helps dramatically reduce integration costs by making available free reference implementations and APIs addressing a full range of business-critical areas within OSS. To date, over 20 ISV products are certified OSS through Java-compliant.

“With decades of telecommunications experience, first-hand leadership in OSS through Java and powerful hardware and software, Sun Microsystems continues to establish vital, long- lasting relationships with key members of the telecommunications industry,” said Darrell Jordan-Smith, Vice President of Global Telecommunications, Sun Microsystems. “Today’s deal with KT marks an important milestone in a collaborative process that helps carriers, ISVs and infrastructure providers alike standardize on open standards-based technology.”

The BioSciences Group of Fujitsu Offers ‘High Throughput Docking’ to Overcome Challenges of High Throughput Screening

Bio-IT World Expo – Boston, Massachusetts
May 18 , 2005

At Bio-IT World Expo in Boston, The BioSciences Group of Fujitsu Computer Systems demonstrated its offerings in “High Throughput Docking,” (HT Docking) as a means to make High Throughput Screening (HTS) more productive and effective in drug discovery.

One of the basic challenges of High Throughput Screening is that it can sometimes be inefficient, as the process requires the high-volume use of inexpensive assays to filter results. This leads to potential “false negative” results that can cause promising leads to be missed – in turn leading to lost discovery opportunities and wasted resources. Fujitsu technology and methods demonstrate how this can be overcome by in silico “High Throughput Docking” as a complement to traditional High Throughput Screening.

HT Docking is an in silico technique that allows researchers to dock entire libraries of compounds against a potentially large number of target proteins via computer modeling – prior to, or in parallel with, conventional screening – to eliminate the need for performing assays on the vast bulk of unlikely leads. As a result, researchers will be able to use better, more reliable assays on a smaller number of more promising leads. In turn, this will help reduce the problem of “lost opportunities,” by reducing false negatives that make finding the best candidates for drug development even more challenging.

Fujitsu offers HT Docking hardware and software solutions in support of its method, which entails progressive in silico validation of leads through a variety of algorithms. The Fujitsu process is as follows:

  1. ShapeDock – a fast search algorithm that quickly filters millions of possible leads down to tens of thousands
  2. FastDock™ – a slower, more precise automated docking process that further prioritizes leads down to hundreds
  3. Precise free energy of binding calculations using GROMACS, a molecular dynamics simulation which models in detail the binding energy of protein ligand interactions, including accurately modeling hydration effects on binding energetics. This technique is designed for generating tens of validated leads
  4. The validated leads are then subjected to high-quality screening assays

“The concept of ‘High Throughput Docking’ is not a new one,” said Takahiro Tsunekawa, vice president of the BioIT Solutions Group. “It is a well-known idea that, due to past technology limitations, was considered impractical for use on a scale comparable to that of High Throughput Screening.”

According to Dr. Michael McManus, vice president of the BioSciences Group, “The Fujitsu philosophy is to save the HTS component until later in the process – after the majority of unpromising leads have been winnowed by High Throughput Docking.”

He added, “After making a careful study of how to make the technique practical and affordable for researchers, Fujitsu technology and methods are now in a position to enable HT Docking as a viable complement to HTS, to make this process more efficient and cost-effective.”
