Sun Microsystems, Inc., (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the availability of a new, specialized Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) practice called SOA Path. The new offering is integral to Sun’s initiative to bring pragmatic Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solutions to market. The new offering allows customers to access Sun’s Java platform and SOA implementation expertise at critical points in the SOA technology lifecycle, from concept, through readiness to implementation. The initiative is designed to help customers practice, adapt, transform and hone their Java Web services using a pragmatic approach that delivers incremental, affordable benefits based on standards-based solutions.

“Today’s IT infrastructure requires a higher level of abstraction, integration and alignment to ensure true business agility,” said John Loiacono, executive vice president of Sun’s software group. “Sun believes that its pragmatic SOA approach offers customers the agility and security needed to meet business challenges head-on, both today as well as in the future. Sun’s SOA expertise, Java technology innovation and industry-leading, standards-based products represent the building blocks for a highly flexible and unified enterprise Web services environment.”

Sun’s SOA expertise enhances the delivery of products and services that support the Sun Java Enterprise System (Java ES) platform and are based on SOA and Web services standards running on the award-winning Solaris 10 Operating System. Within this portfolio is the Sun Java System Application Platform Suite — a solution that directly addresses the use of Web services components to integrate disparate enterprise systems; the Sun Java Web Infrastructure Suite — a quick start approach to Web services; and the Sun Java Identity Management Suite — the industry’s most complete and integrated set of products to securely manage user identities.

Sun also includes the industry’s most powerful and efficient developer tools in each of the Sun Java Suites allowing customers to quickly and easily develop and deploy Service Oriented Architecture and industry standard, web services-based solutions. The Sun Java Studio Enterprise 7, and Sun Java Studio Creator are award winning developer favorites for high performance development environments.

“The VPS ASA (The Norwegian Central Securities Depository) are working to realize the vision of architecting an open and flexible next generation solution,” said Sissel Bergh Bakke, Chief Information Officer, VPS ASA. “We engaged Sun for a three-week SOA Opportunity Assessment. It helped to identify existing strengths, as well as the high level requirements needed to successfully achieve our business priorities. Today Our architects are now engaged with Sun to establish a common, standard SOA infrastructure and framework for the development and management of our business services and to help mentor our project teams develop the necessary skills.”

Services Provided by SOA Path include:

  • SOA Jumpstart Workshop: A program to assist customers as they execute an SOA approach to business systems implementation in terms of services requirements analysis, services candidate architecture and services implementation. The workshop also helps to prepare both technical and business teams so that they can actively contribute to and collaborate in the process of designing, implementing and accepting the new services oriented approach to delivering business services.
  • SOA Opportunity Assessment: An analysis of key business processes & Enterprise Architecture alignment that results in a comprehensive set of recommendations and a roadmap for adopting SOA. Within the jointly prioritized and agreed upon scope, primary areas analyzed include architecture, organization strategy, skills, process and practices, Technologies & Tools. The analysis also evaluates design time & deployment considerations for specific composite application / services implementations that are currently underway.
  • SOA Proof of Concept: Identify & evaluate key candidate projects that have significant business services reuse potential and deliver Services Candidate Architecture for them as Proof of Concepts. This approach ultimately leverages economies of scale in delivering business services, minimizes risk and simplifies business initiatives through services reuse.
  • SOA Center of Excellence: A focal point for reinforcing and promoting SOA recommended principles and reuse of current processes, procedures, frameworks, standards and compliance.

Sun’s pragmatic approach to addressing SOA implementations is recognized as a leadership move for the company. “Vendors who understand the importance of an architected approach to the application of Web services technology are investing heavily in SOA as a core competence,” said Nick Gall, Research VP at Gartner, Inc.
