Sun Announces Availability of Enhanced Compliance and Content Management Solutions with Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System

Sun and Independent Software Vendor Partners Provide Integrated Solution to Meet Customers’ Electronic Document, Records Management and Retention Needs

MENLO PARK, Calif.
June 20, 2005

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced the general availability of the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System. The system, a combination of the Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS Appliance and Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving Software offers an affordable and price competitive alternative for customers’ requirements for growing and complex records retention. Integrated with Sun’s industry leading(1) Identity Management solutions, to administer and report on access controls, and major ISV applications; the Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System provides a fully integrated solution to help facilitate compliance with the myriad of both government and business roles regulations — including HIPAA for healthcare, SEC Rule 17a-4 and Basel 2 for financial services, 21 CFR 11 for life sciences, as well the Sarbanes Oxley Act and its global equivalents.

The Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System enforces electronic record-retention policies at the storage level. Write-once read-many (WORM) files are non-rewritable and non-erasable. Robust security features–such as audit logs, user authentication, secure clock and access controls–combine to help safeguard the integrity of vital digital information. The system is fully redundant and, can be configured with clustering to ensure no single point of failure. It supports snapshot copies, remote data mirroring and a choice of either Fibre Channel or SATA disk that scales to 179TB. The system is flexible to allow customers to configure how much of the disk is WORM protected; providing room to grow into compliance as needs expand. For layered storage, customers can opt for WORM tape backup/archive as well. The Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System has been evaluated to meet the Securities and Exchange Committee’s 240.17a-4 regulation for electronic storage media.

Bruce Overoye, director of IT, Santa Clara County Tax Collector’s Office, said: “We process over 850,000 payments, of property taxes annually, totaling $3 billion. All these transactions are imaged and each one has retention requirements of five, seven, 12 and 30 years, depending on the type of property tax. It is becoming increasingly critical that we drive security and data protection down to the data storage layer. Because of this we are piloting the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System with our Vignette Imaging and Document Management system, as a way of protecting the integrity of the content we store and enforcing the retention policies we have in place at the County.”

“We see regulatory compliance and data security as key drivers for NAS growth,” said Pushan Rinnen, principal analyst at Gartner. “Although there are many NAS products in the market today, enterprises have limited file archiving options that are powerful and cost-effective enough for HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley.”

Sun continues to promote customer choice and flexibility by providing interoperability between the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System and applications for e-mail, document, and corporate records management from some of the industry’s leading Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). To date, over 50 data management and content applications – including imaging, messaging, technical computing, oil and gas exploration, and data protection — have been qualified to securely and reliably store data on the system. In addition, a variety of the industry’s best Enterprise Content Management application providers, including AXS-One, iLumin, Mobius Management Systems and Vignette, have qualified their applications with the system’s compliance features to enforce retention and leverage the system’s write-once, read-many (WORM) capability.

“Sun is making great strides to build and deliver integrated compliance offerings that raise the bar for Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), helping customers navigate and overcome the complex maze of regulatory records management and retention requirements set both by the government and their own internal guidelines,” said Mark Canepa, executive vice president of Network Storage at Sun. “Sun’s storage portfolio, industry leading identity management solutions, Solaris(TM) 10 data-management functionality and the support of the ISV community, enable Sun to deliver end-to-end, scalable document and records management systems, that a point-product simply cannot match.”

Sun’s portfolio for enabling customers to store corporate documents and records includes the Compliance and Content Management Solution, the Content Infrastructure System for general data archiving on tiered storage, and the 5310 Compliance Archiving System. Sun focuses on risk management and security as an integral part of its products and services, from the desktop application to the back-end archive. This offers customers the capability of archiving regulated data in a flexible, scalable storage solution, and an alternative, end-to-end systems option to point-product solutions offered by storage-only companies.

The Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System is generally available worldwide through Sun and its iForce Storage Elite partners. Pricing begins at US $73,995 for a 2 TB Fibre Channel configuration, and $81,995 for a 6 TB SATA configuration. Prices include all software costs(2).

Sun Microsystems Addresses SOA Governance with Sun Service Registry

Comprehensive Service Registry and Repository offering to support both UDDI v3 and ebXML Registry 3.0 standards enabling Secure, Federated Information Management

SANTA CLARA, Calif.
June 15, 2005

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the early access availability of the Sun Service Registry for customers who need to track and manage increasing numbers of web services. Sun’s Service Registry also includes an integrated repository for storing service metadata, and providing additional capabilities such as web services lifecycle management. The combined registry-repository serves as a cornerstone for true service oriented architecture (SOA) governance.

With the rapid adoption of SOA and web services projects, enterprises need to manage the resulting vast array of metadata that needs organized storage and discovery for increasing scalability requirements. Sun’s Service Registry enables service oriented architectures by providing centralized access to discovery, use and reuse of web services as well as secure, federated information management. By offering a unique single-registry solution that supports both UDDI v3 and ebXML Registry 3.0 standards, Sun’s Service Registry enables customers to publish, manage, govern, discover and reuse services within a broad range of applications.

“SOA Governance requires more than today’s registries provide,”said Mark Bauhaus, vice president for Java Web Services , Sun Microsystems. “With Sun’s Service Registry, customers can now truly address both web services access and SOA governance. By providing a shared infrastructure component, integrated with various products of the Sun Java Enterprise System (Java ES), Sun helps enable SOA for a wide range of government and commercial customers around the world.”

“A meta-data repository is a key enabling technology for SOA,” said Yefim Natis, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner, Inc. “It is safe to say that no long-term enterprise SOA initiative can succeed without an integrated and searchable repository/registry.”

Key features, including the ability to uniquely define information models and relationships among metadata and help to ensure conformance of published services and content for more flexible customer environments. In addition, customers can manage aspects of the web services to reflect their IT policies and use event-based delivery of information to support specific processes.

Future Java ES components will integrate with the Service Registry including Access Manager for user authentication, Application Server deployer/administrator for managing service lifecycles, Java Studio Enterprise service developer for develop-deploy-test cycles, and a Portal Server for managing WS-Remote Portlet and producer descriptions. Integration with the Application Platform Suite and the Identity Management Suite are also being planned. Customer applications can integrate similarly via Service Registry API’s and protocols. Sun’s Java ES running on the Solaris operating system (OS) delivers a core set of industry-leading shared enterprise network services as a single, integrated entity on a predictable release cycle.

Sun will demonstrate the Service Registry at JavaOne 2005 conference, and will ship the product as part of the Sun Java ES R4 in the Fall. An Early Access version of Sun’s Service Registy is included in Java Web Services Developer Pack (Java WSDP) 1.6 which will be generally available later this month. For more information on Sun’s Service Registry, visit http://www.sun.com/soa.

Fujitsu FLASHWAVE® 7500 ROADM Receives Diamond Technology Award from Broadband Gear Report

SAN ANTONIO, Texas,
June 15, 2005

Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, announced today that they have received a Diamond Technology Award in the “Advanced Networking Solutions” category for their market-leading FLASHWAVE® 7500 Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM).

“This platform received an extremely solid score,” said Tim Hermes, publisher of Broadband Gear Report. “Our review panel pulled no punches with their product evaluation, and the FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM has certainly captured the respect of these industry leaders.”

The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM incorporates the industry’s most advanced optical technologies. The new Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) enables multi-degree hub nodes and allows grooming across multiple Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) ring networks. It also provides lower optical loss than other switch technologies, enabling larger networks and support for additional optical nodes per network. Multi-port muxponders allow multiple signals to be multiplexed onto a single wavelength at 10 Gbps. This capability is being used by Multiple System Operators (MSOs) in several major U.S. markets to combine up to eight Gigabit Ethernet links onto a single wavelength, thus allowing thousands of Video on Demand (VOD) streams across a single network. Innovative Flexponder™ interfaces offer the function of a SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) on a single card.

Further OPEX savings are achieved by implementing full C-band tunable narrowband optics and Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP)-based interfaces, which allow all ITU-T wavelengths and client connections for multiple services to be supported by a single optical line card. This capability significantly simplifies sparing requirements and reduces deployment time for new services. Integrated Variable Optical Attenuators (VOAs) actively monitor the power levels on each optical channel, automatically adjusting and tuning those levels to maintain optimal network performance.

“Widespread use of our FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM within large MSO networks is a big reason why RHK named Fujitsu the market leader in North American ROADM deployment with an 83% share,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu. “The FLASHWAVE 7500 platform supports the demanding service requirements of today’s MSOs by allowing multiple voice, video, data and storage networks to be combined onto a single converged network that eliminates the cost and complexity of maintaining multiple networks.”

The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM will be showcased and discussed this week along with other scalable and reliable triple-play solutions in Fujitsu Booth No. 527 during the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) Cable-Tec Expo 2005 tradeshow. The exhibition runs from June 15 through June 17, 2005 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. The platform will also be featured in a special edition of Broadband Gear Report in early June, as well as in the print edition that will be available during SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2005.

Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology – Cardiology Cener Reaches 500th Patient Milestone

Physicians Deliver Advanced Cardiac Care Using Toshiba’s Aquilion 64-slice CFX CT

TUSTIN, Calif.,
June 14, 2005

Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology (MDR), a dedicated heart center located in New York City, today announced it has successfully scanned its 500 th patient using the center’s state of the art Aquilion 64-slice CFX from Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc (TAMS).  The announcement, which was made in conjunction with the 7th Annual Stanford Radiology International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT, further emphasizes the impact of 64-slice CT technology on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

During the symposia, Dr. Jeffrey P. Goldman, director of MRI and CT at MDR, will deliver a lunch-time presentation hosted by Toshiba about the benefits of multi-slice CT for cardiac applications, his experiences with the Aquilion CFX CT, and its positive impact on his practice and the care of his patients.  The advanced image quality and speed delivered by the Aquilion CFX allows cardiologists to uncover early signs of heart disease, such as arterial plaque, and make treatment recommendations without the need for invasive exploration of the heart.  In fact, Dr. Goldman states that the Aquilion CFX allows clinicians at MDR to identify indications of disease earlier in its progression, potentially reducing a patient’s risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

“Images of the heart are extremely difficult to capture because it’s in a state of continuous motion.  Until the advent of multi-slice CT, cardiologists had to rely on more invasive, risky procedures, like catheterized angiography, to give an accurate view of what was happening inside the patient’s heart,” Goldman said.  “The Aquilion CFX produces brilliant images allowing me to view intricate areas of the heart, to accurately pinpoint current cardiac issues and to detect potential problems in the earliest stages – even for patients with a normal stress test.”

According to Doug Ryan, director, CT Business Unit, TAMS, “Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology (MDR) is a leading imaging center in New York City due to their experience and ongoing investments in state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic technologies.  Their recent acquisition of the Aquilion 64-slice CFX is a testament to the commitment by MDR and the technology of the Aquilion to diagnose the earliest stages of heart disease and improve cardiac patient care,” Ryan said.

MDR is renowned for its thought leadership in the area of cardiac imaging, as well as for utilizing the latest cardiac imaging tools to provide patients with a higher standard of care.  Toshiba’s Aquilion 64-slice CFX CT scanner is just one component of the facility’s suite of imaging technologies.  TAMS’ unique 64-row Quantum detector enables the Aquilion scanner to acquire 64 simultaneous slices of 0.5 mm of the heart with each 400-millisecond gantry revolution, which allows cardiologists to scan the heart with superb precision.

The 7 thAnnual Stanford Radiology International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT will be held at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco on June 15-18, 2005.

Fujitsu Introduces New Multiservice Access Options for its FLASHWAVE® 4020 ESP

Separate Interface Modules Support Long Reach, Intermediate Reach and CWDM Requirements for Converged Broadband Access Networks

SAN ANTONIO, Texas
June 14, 2005

Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, today announced an upgrade to its multiservice FLASHWAVE® 4020 Ethernet Service Platform (ESP) to support Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) interfaces. New SFP-based OC-3 and OC-12 base unit shelves are now available, and each can be equipped with matching-rate SFP modules to support Long Reach (LR), Intermediate Reach (IR) and Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) requirements for converged access networks. Since these SFP modules can be easily interchanged, networks can be upgraded and maintained more conveniently than with traditional optic modules, resulting in substantial Operating Expense (OPEX) cost savings.

The updated FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP will be showcased and discussed this week along with other scalable and reliable triple-play solutions in Fujitsu Booth No. 527 during the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) Cable-Tec Expo 2005 tradeshow. The exhibition runs from June 15 through June 17, 2005 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.

“Today’s small-to-medium business customers require solutions that offer both DS1 and Ethernet services to support today’s most popular services,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. “DS1 services are the most commonly used access method for PBX voice services and Frame Relay data services, while Ethernet offers the best option for router interconnection. With the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP, carriers can deliver both of these dominant services simultaneously from the same device, while offering all the proven reliability of SONET.”

The addition of SFP interfaces gives service providers more options for flexible access networks. The new CWDM capabilities allow carriers to get additional capacity from their fiber plant and add services to business customers along existing fiber routes.

For CWDM applications, up to eight separate OC-3 or OC-12 SONET signals can be transported over a single fiber pair, offering an 8x increase in the capacity of existing optical access networks. Individual SFP-based optics for the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP support wavelengths that are compatible with the standard International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.694.2 CWDM grid to allow full interoperability with standards-based CWDM equipment. This capability allows the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP to be connected to commercially available CWDM passive couplers such as the FLASHWAVE 7120 optical extension system or FLASHWAVE 7410 CWDM access system. The FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP can also utilize commercially available aerial mount CWDM couplers to support easy connections to MSO master headends and primary/secondary hubs.

The FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP supports both seven DS1 and four 10/100Base-T Ethernet services over a protected or unprotected OC-3 or OC-12 SONET network interface. The device’s compact 1U (1.75″) height, low cost, minimal power requirements and advanced protection options, make the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP a popular choice for delivering today’s next-generation voice and data services. The two new base unit configurations with SFP optic options support highly flexible designs, easy installation, and a simplified inventory process.

Channel Connection Award Logo

The annual Business Solutions Channel Connection Awards recognize extraordinary integrators and resellers that deliver innovative document management installations across vertical industries. All winners and finalists were selected based on the scope, complexity and resulting ROI of the nominated installation.

“This year we received numerous exceptional nominations across all vertical categories making the selection process extremely difficult,” said Ken Congdon, content management editor, Business Solutions. “The Hershey, ImageSource and PROFORMANCE installations all stood out for their integration delivery and impressive ROI, offering an effective, reliable and high-quality document imaging component.”

“Fujitsu is honored to be recognized for the document imaging scanning solutions we provided for these three outstanding installations,” said Victor Kan, vice president of sales and marketing, Imaging Products Group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. “These awards are evidence of our commitment, relationships and broad reach within the banking, government and healthcare industries.”

Business Solutions recognized Hershey Technologies, ImageSource, Inc. and PROFORMANCE for the following installations:

Innovative Banking/Finance Installation Award

PROFORMANCE, a systems integrator and software development firm based in Spring, Texas, won the Innovative Banking/Finance Installation Award for a solution it developed for First Volunteer Bank of Tennessee. The industry-specific solution integrated Hyland’s OnBase document management system and two proprietary utilities, PF Bar Code and PF Host Synchronization, with Fujitsu M4097D Low Volume Production Duplex Scanners, fi-4220C Color Duplex Workgroup Scanners, and fi-4340C Color Duplex Document Scanners to image loan documents from the bank’s 21 branches. The integrated solution has helped the bank improve customer service levels by providing tellers and other authorized personnel with immediate access to loan documents, signature cards and customer data.
